
DeWitt first appeared on stage at the age of 13 years old. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in addition to the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said she never met the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary while at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her part in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was the first job she had after being cast in the pilot episode that followed. Janet was also featured in an episode of The Ropers in 1979. DeWitt made her acting debut in an episode in 1984 of Three's Company. The stage was her first time back on stage in the month of June in 1991 in which she appeared on an Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured the character an adaptation of her voice voice that was voiced by another actress in 1997. The actress appeared on the episode Cybill and also had an appearance on the last episode of Living Single.
